Micro-Move #2: Pause with Purpose
When did “How are you?” become a competitive sport? “Busy!” “SO busy.” “Crazy busy.” “I’m so busy I ate lunch standing over the sink while answering an email and mentally attending my 2:00 meeting.”
Okay. You win. Please collect your complimentary stress headache on the way out.
Somewhere along the way, busy became a badge of honor. A packed calendar meant important person doing important things. Back-to-back meetings became normal. And five unscheduled minutes started looking suspicious.
WARNING!!!! Constant motion is not the same as meaningful progress. And there’s a cost to all that motion that we don’t talk about enough. When we’re constantly reacting, we stop making intentional choices. We respond instead of listening. We solve problems before understanding them. We say yes before considering what we’re saying no to.
And for leaders? That doesn’t just affect your day. It affects everyone around you.
JAIME’S MICRO-RANT
Can we please talk about “I don’t have time to stop”? Friend. That is usually when you MOST need to stop. We race from meeting to meeting. Answer emails while we’re on calls. Half-listen to someone while mentally writing a response to someone else. And then at 4:37, our brains have 37 tabs open, one is playing music, three are frozen, and WE CANNOT FIND THE MUSIC.
Being busy feels productive because LOOK AT US GO. But here’s what I want you to consider: Are you actually moving things forward, or are you just keeping things moving?
Those are two very different things. A team can spend an entire week in meetings without making a meaningful decision. A leader can respond to 100 emails and still miss the one conversation that really matters. You can cross 17 things off your to-do list and never touch the one thing that would make the biggest difference.
Activity fills a calendar. Intention creates impact. And sometimes, you can’t recognize the difference until you stop long enough to notice.
THE LEADERSHIP COST OF NEVER PAUSING
Here’s where this gets bigger than your calendar. Your pace doesn’t just affect your productivity. It influences your team’s culture.
Think about it. When a leader responds to every message immediately, what expectation might that create for everyone else? When a leader rushes through conversations, what happens to the people who need a little more time to speak up? When a leader moves straight into problem-solving, what ideas or perspectives never get heard?
People take cues from what leaders consistently do, not just what they say. And if everything feels urgent, people can lose sight of what actually matters. The pause creates space between what happens and how you choose to respond. That space is where better questions, clearer priorities, and more intentional leadership can begin.
THE PRACTICAL MICRO-MOVE: THE 3-P PAUSE
You don’t need a meditation app, a mountain retreat, or a calendar that magically clears itself. You need a moment of intention. The next time you feel yourself rushing, reacting, or running on autopilot, try this:
1. PAUSE: What am I reacting to? Before sending that email, jumping into the conversation, or saying yes to another request, stop for a moment. Ask yourself: Am I responding to what’s actually happening, or am I reacting to the pressure I’m feeling?
2. PRIORITIZE: What matters most right now? Not what’s loudest. Not what’s newest. Not what someone marked URGENT in all caps. What actually deserves your attention?Sometimes the answer is the task in front of you. Sometimes it’s the person you’ve been half-listening to.
3. PROCEED: What’s the most intentional next move? Maybe it’s asking one more question. Maybe it’s delegating instead of doing. Maybe it’s saying, “Let me think about that before I commit.” And sometimes it’s deciding that something simply doesn’t need to happen today.
Pause. Prioritize. Proceed. Three small steps that can change how you show up in the moments that matter.
TINY WORKPLACE WEIRDNESS
Blocking “FOCUS TIME” on your calendar…then accepting a meeting right on top of it. AHEM!!! That was the focus time. We see you. But seriously, every time we abandon a boundary we’ve set for ourselves, we’re making a choice about what gets our attention.
The question is whether we’re making that choice intentionally.
YOUR MOVE: THE FIVE-MINUTE RESET
Sometime today, take five actual minutes. No email. No scrolling. No “I’m totally pausing” while simultaneously answering a text, reorganizing your desk, and making tomorrow’s to-do list. Five minutes.
Then ask yourself these three questions:
- What am I doing out of habit instead of intention?
- What deserves more of my attention than it’s getting?
- What’s ONE thing I can change about how I spend the rest of my day?
Then act on your answer.
- Cancel a meeting that doesn’t need to happen.
- Give someone your undivided attention.
- Stop saying yes automatically.
- Take ten minutes to think before making a decision.
Because the goal isn’t to become less busy just for the sake of being less busy. The goal is to become more intentional with the time, energy, and influence you already have. And here’s the real challenge: Don’t just try it once. Choose one moment every day this week to Pause. Prioritize. Proceed. Notice what changes.
ONE QUESTION BEFORE YOU GO
Where would a purposeful pause make the biggest difference for you right now: your decisions, your conversations, or your priorities?
I’d love to hear your answer in the comments. Remember, sometimes the most powerful move you can make is choosing not to move quite so fast.
Small pause. Clearer purpose. Bigger impact.
